Actually, 2020 should have been a year of many different celebrations. Because it was the anniversary year of the Hamburg software professionals at novomind: the company's 20th birthday. Corona has changed everything. Fewer celebrations, but many new experiences. But it's still an anniversary - looking back on 20 years of novomind is like taking a journey from the online gold rush of 2000 to the global lockdown of 2020.

Peter Samuelsen is an islander. "A real boy from the coast", as he likes to say himself. Born on the North Frisian island of Pellworm, he brings with him a mixture of down-to-earthness and determination - the "just do it" mentality. Being courageous, being creative, trying things out. To this day, "just do it" is part of novomind's DNA. And Peter Samuelsen is one of the pioneers in Germany when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent commerce and customer service software.

Cast off into heavy seas
Peter Samuelsen founded novomind AG in 2000. It was the year when the "new market" had reached its peak and then collapsed. In Germany, there was an online gold rush until March - then the Internet bubble burst, the Nemax (Neuer Markt Index) crashed and the gold rush was followed by the big hangover. On 1 March, novomind launched in the middle of this time of upheaval. "We had that total start-up feeling and wanted nothing less than to conquer the whole world with our intelligent software solutions," Samuelsen recalls today. Companies like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Netflix didn't exist yet. Nor were there smartphones. "The big ideas and platforms were still in the heads of visionaries, strategists and developers. With their breakthrough, true global networking began. And we were right in the middle of it." It was during this phase that novomind's DNA was completed: artificial intelligence combined with creative developer spirit and a "just do it" mentality. And everything made in Hamburg.

It's the crew that counts - and the course
As an owner-managed company, novomind has always set its own course. In increasingly large waters and surrounded by numerous tall ships, super tankers and many a shark, Peter Samuelsen and his crew have proven themselves to be fast, agile and flexible over the past few years. An important unique selling point in an increasingly globalised market, where investors and banks are setting the pace in many places. At novomind in Hamburg, they tick differently: for two years now, the company's shares have been distributed exclusively within the company - previously external shares were bought back and distributed among the board, management and staff. The board has been expanded, competencies and responsibilities have been distributed across many shoulders and the focus has been broadened - just do it. Founder and CEO Peter Samuelsen sees it with pleasure: "We have always set ourselves big goals. Besides know-how, team spirit has always been one of our strengths. And that is now also reflected in a broad management team."

20 years of novomind - that's 20 years of company history with heart and brain. The journey began in March 2000 in Hamburg and will not be stopped by Corona.

It goes without saying that course and crew have also been put to the test in 20 years: Be it the worldwide shock after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, international financial and economic crises, the consistent transformation process from a solution provider to a product house, or even the significant expansion of the Executive Board with all its entrepreneurial changes and effects. Samuelsen and his crew always had their goals in mind - entrepreneurial growth with a sense of proportion, international expansion and the establishment and development of a powerful partner network. And: novomind software should always be the best in its respective market.

Hello World - the global world is getting smaller
Since 2018, novomind has adopted "Hello World" as its symbolic motto, following the huge economic and technological changes in the world. The internet has made the world smaller, digitalisation faster. In this global market, novomind now operates on all continents, either itself or with partners from the continuously growing international partner network.

In addition to the first steps into the American markets and the UK, market entry in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region played an important role. In 2018, the novomind MEA subsidiary was founded in Dubai. "Our internationalisation has really taken off since then," says Samuelsen. "We quickly realised that the demand for intelligent software products is huge in this part of the world. And we found a partner who is from the region and knows the people." Around 15 companies and institutions are on the list of new customers in the MEA region so far, ranging from a luxury clinic to a universal insurer to a telco giant. The trend is strongly upward. "Hello World" has created a lot of momentum for the novomind team and given the entrepreneurial journey a powerful boost.

Full speed ahead and then Corona - the endurance test in the anniversary year
The anniversary year is now going so completely differently than planned, and not just at novomind. The Corona pandemic is causing a state of emergency everywhere. Not an appropriate time for anniversary celebrations. Where the year started with full sails and the compass was firmly set on further internationalisation, the worldwide "ports" are suddenly further away again. The situation has changed again. novomind spent most of the lockdown in the home office; a challenge for infrastructure and business development. "That was a real endurance test. Together with the customers, we passed it," says Samuelsen. Various go-live projects have even taken place completely from the home office, a shared new experience for customers and developers, which has also brought new insights again.

"This is also why we have managed to get through the Corona crisis well so far," says Samuelsen. Intelligent software products with the premise of contact avoidance are in demand. What was primarily developed for service and contact centres is now being used in more and more industries. Messaging, video telephony, chatbots and AI have long since found their way into the daily life of business and society, and Corona has provided an additional digitalisation boost here. The task now is to process the newly gained knowledge and to implement and use it in further business development.

20 years of novomind - that's 20 years of company history with heart and brain. With artificial intelligence and creative ideas. The journey began in March 2000 in Hamburg
and will not be stopped by Corona. The celebration will take place anytime soon - just keep going!
